HCIG Chair and Program Planner, Julie Yingling, Humboldt State U, called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. and handed out the agenda. Thirteen people attended the meeting.
Old Business
Stephanie Coopman, presented the webspinner's report. She reported making recent changes she make to the HCIG website to give it a more contemporary look and make it easier to navigate. These changes included:
Coopman also added the following information to the website:
She reported updating the website membership list a few days before the convention and enlisting a student to work on some of the health communication resources pages. Finally, Coopman stated that the HCIG listserv has a new location. Deidre Cavanaugh started the original listserv and is no longer at SFSU (where the listserv was located). Coopman recently moved the listserv and updated the list. The members agreed that Coopman should add all HCIG member email addresses to the listserv, since it is an announcement-only list. Messages will prominently display the instructions for unsubscribing from the list.
Christie Beck, Chair of the Ad Hoc Bylaws Committee, was unable to attend the business meeting due to health reasons. Stephanie Coopman led the discussion of the draft of Interest Group's bylaws. The members approved the bylaws, with one change (the Review Committee to be chosen by the Interest Group Chair rather than elected at the business meeting). Julie Yingling thanked the members of the Bylaws Committee, particularly Christie Beck, for their work on drafting the document.
New Business
Kathy Adams, 1st Vice-President and 2002 Convention Program Planner, provided a handout on the Long Beach convention, March 2-5, at the Westin Long Beach Hotel. The convention theme is "Communication Creates, Constrains, and Liberates." Adams reminded members to pre-register for the convention and stay in the hotel. Room rate is $135 for all rooms. Last year's convention in Sacramento cost the Association over $8000 because we did not make our room requirements (so the hotel charged us for some meeting rooms). Adams invited members to attend the CSU, Long Beach, reception on Sunday. The local hosts are planning possible activities such as a trip to the Getty Museum, a golf outing, and tennis tournament.
Madeline Keaveney, CSU, Chico, did not attend the business meeting due to health reasons. Stephanie Coopman attended the Saturday afternoon program planner's meeting. She noted that the Interest Group will likely have 9 slots for the 2002 convention.
Julie Yingling then led the group in a discussion of ideas for panel content and format. Topic ideas included:
