American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. "The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) is the nation's leading group of professionals providing health care for women. It is a private, voluntary, nonprofit membership organization." This site provides a physician look-up page, newsletters, and event/meeting schedules. This page is more geared to the physician than the patient.

AMA Health Insight Webpage. "The purpose of this site is to support the AMA's [American Medical Association] ongoing mission to promote the art and science of medicine for the betterment of public health by providing timely information on matters important to the health of America." An easy site to navigate, it provides information on general health or specific conditions and covers prevention and disease. The site headers are family focus, general health, interactive health, medical news, doctor finder, hospital finder, and survey.

Complete Home Medical Guide. "The Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Complete Home Medical Guide reflects many of the changes that have taken place in American medicine since publication of the first edition in 1985. Although our goal-namely, to provide you with a comprehensive home reference that teaches you about your body in sickness and health- remains unchanged, we are placing increased emphasis on disease prevention and your role in maintaining your own good health." This is an extensive site with lots of information about all kind of health from oral to mental to physical. Also, symptoms, diagnosis, wellness, ethical decision making, and elder care. The website is several layers of easy to understand and comprehensive information.

The Columbia Virtual Body. This site is sponsored by Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation. "It contains a series of elaborate presentations of the various parts and functions of the human body." You must load shock wave technology to view the interactive presentations.

Doctor's Guide to the Internet - Doctor's Guide HomePage. This is a site geared towards doctors, but it is pretty simple to understand. It has information on everything from where doctors travel on vacation to the latest developments in health care and possible treatments. Includes links to medical conferences, bookstore, new medicines, and the latest information. Extensive site filled with health information and resources. The site is sponsored by Canadian-based "P\S\L Consulting Group Inc. an organisation dedicated to providing the information and information services most likely to help promote the informed and appropriate use of medicines by health care professionals and organisations as well as by the people to whom they are prescribed."

Health On the Net Foundation. "The Health On the Net Foundation (HON), created in 1995, is a not-for-profit International Swiss Organization. HON's mission is to guide lay persons or non-medical users and medical practitioners to useful and reliable online medical and health information." The site is available in English and French. Ongoing projects have focused on better search engines for accessing health information on the WWW, such as MedHunt.

Huffington Center on Aging. "The Huffington Center on Aging has one of the most advanced aging research programs in the country. Especially prominent are our programs in cell and molecular biology of aging, cardiovascular diseases, ethics and outcomes research." Sponsored by the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, this is a graphics-intensive site providing information on geriatric education and research. "The Huffington Center is extensively involved in undergraduate and graduate education. Education in aging and aging-related topics extends through college, medical school, residency training and post-graduate training for physicians and allied health professionals. We also have an extensive program of education for the lay public."

Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs. Part of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, the Center "works with many international agencies, foundations, governments, and nongovernmental organization in the US and overseas to promote healthy behavior." This site contains link to USAID, IUNFPA, UNICEF, World Bank, Rockefeller Foundation, and Packard Foundation. This site provides a global view of health care issues.

Medical Breakthroughs. "The country's largest news-gathering organization covering medical breakthroughs, family health and issues important to women. Ivanhoe's purpose is to produce and deliver life-changing information to the world." Reported by Ivanhoe Broadcast News, Inc., site has useful graphics and information. It has real time videos you can access, pharmaceutical information, and the latest information on medical breakthroughs. However, the site is limited to the topics de jour, primarily the latest and greatest advancements in medicine. The site includes a search engine as well to access indepth information on research in different fields.

National Council Against Health Fraud. "NCAHF is a private nonprofit, voluntary health agency that focuses upon health misinformation, fraud, and quackery as public health problems. Our positions are based upon the principles of science that underlie consumer protection law. We advocate: (a) adequate disclosure in labeling and other warranties to enable consumers to make truly informed choices; (b) premarketing proof of safety and effectiveness for products and services claimed to prevent, alleviate, or cure any health problem; and, (c) accountability for those who violate the law." NCAHF is "comprised of health professionals, educators, researchers, attorneys and concerned citizens. Its officers and board members serve without compensation."

New England Journal of Medicine. Full-text journal issues are by subscription only. Still, this site gives visitors a look at the most-recent research in medicine. Also includes the journal's first issue in January 1812, links to additional medical sources, and upcoming medical meetings. "The New England Journal of Medicine On-line now offers subscribers access to full text plus several additional features. The Journal On-line continues to offer to all users many selections from the Journal, including abstracts of all scientific articles. The current issue becomes available on the Web Wednesday at 5 PM. "

PubMed. "PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, provides access to over 11 million citations from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources."

Quackwatch, Inc.. Founded in 1969 by Dr. Stephen Barrett, a retired physician and board member of the National Council Against Health Fraud, "Quackwatch, Inc., a member of Consumer Federation of America, is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to combat health-related frauds, myths, fads, and fallacies." An informative and enlightening site available in English, Dutch, and French.
